DIY Laundry Detergent

How does only spending $0.01 per load of laundry sound? Amazing right?! Keep reading below and I'll teach you how! This has revolutionized our laundry game and helped us scale back our monthly spending dramatically. This is my most commonly requested tutorial, so I'm doing it for all of you!

While I was walking down the laundry isle with a newborn in hand trying to find a detergent that not only smells great, works great and is baby safe but also priced fairly, I realized that they were all over priced and I was not happy spending that hard earned money over something so small. So I went to work, did you realize that you can make your own in about five minutes?! Let's get to work!

You'll need:

  • One 4lb box of Borax
  • One 4lb box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
  • Two bars of ZOTE bar soap (Or any other laundry bar soap brand)
  • One to Two containers of Purex Crystals or Downy Untouchables for scent (Optional!)
  • 5 gallon bucket and lid for storage

Directions:

  1. Shred up all of your bar soap, if you have a food processor that can shred ice and cheese, you're safe! Shred that baby! If not, no biggy, you can use a hand cheese grater or pop it in the microwave in small increments up to one minute. It will bubble up then when it cools you can crumble it! Pretty cool huh?
  2. Shred your scent beads! For years I just mixed them in but the scent is so much stronger when they have been shredded! Trust me!
  3. Pour all your ingredients into your large 5 gallon bucket and mix thoroughly!
  4. For extra frugal-ness, fill up your now empty scent bead container with your new laundry detergent, or use a glass jar with a tight sealing lid. You'll only need about 2 tablespoons for a normal load, amazing right?! So it's going to last you a long time! Between two filthy boys and my husband I've been amazed at how long this has lasted and how effective it is a removing stains!

I would love to hear from you! Let me know how you liked this tutorial in the comments below!

Becca
